Greater Barboursville Community Outreach

A decade of joining hands with compassion for the community.

GBCO November meal served over 120 people with 50 more to go meals.

In the heart of the Barboursville community, a group of compassionate volunteers has been making a significant impact since February 2014. United by the common goal of addressing the needs of neighbors facing hunger, isolation, and other basic necessities, the Greater Barboursville Community Outreach (GBCO) has become a beacon of support and unity.

GBCO is a collective of volunteers fueled by the realization that, even in a prosperous community, some neighbors grapple with fundamental challenges, these volunteers decided to join forces. Their journey is driven by a shared commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of those in need.

Patty Dickey has been with GBCO since 2015 and currently serves as the facilitator of the organization. She is proud that the GBCO is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year and appreciates all the individuals that have volunteered their time, and businesses and organizations that have made contributions.  Patty shared, "Our dedicated group of volunteers are amazing and several have served since the February 2014 inception of the program.  We all get along well and work together to accomplish our mission.”

At the core of GBCO's efforts is a commitment to serving the community. On the last Saturday of each month, at the Barboursville Senior Center, the group provides a free meal to neighbors with limited incomes. This initiative aims not only to assist individuals in stretching their food budgets, but also to create a welcoming space for anyone seeking a hearty meal and companionship.

Patty added, “It is not only about a hot meal each month, but also the socialization” She shared with Stroll Barboursville that over 120 people attended the holiday meal back in December.

Additionally, the volunteers gather on the first Monday evening every other month, for planning, learning, and addressing emergency needs. The sense of community extends beyond organized events, fostering a neighbor-to-neighbor support system.

GBCO is more than a meal service; it's a platform for shared learning and resource-sharing. Volunteers collaborate to identify and meet emergency needs, working together to enhance the well-being of the community. This cooperative spirit reflects the organization's belief in the strength of unity.

The Greater Barboursville Community Outreach invites individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute to this impactful outreach initiative in some of the following ways:

  1. Support  Existing Programs: Continue to contribute to Cabell County's food banks, charities, and other essential programs that serve as a safety net for the working poor, vulnerable, and disabled neighbors.

  2. Get Involved: Connect with GBCO through email, phone, or Facebook to learn about upcoming meals, meetings, and volunteer opportunities. Joining hands with the group provides a direct channel to make a positive impact.

  3. Monetary Donations: Consider sponsoring a meal by means of a donation to GBCO by sending contributions to GBCO, c/o Sharon Smith, Barboursville Senior Center, 711 Central Ave. Barboursville, WV 25504. Every donation directly contributes to  purchasing food or addressing specific emergency needs.
In the spirit of community and compassion, GBCO embodies the words from Galatians 5:13, "Serve one another with love."

Mayor Chris Tatum offered the following: The GBCO includes so many people that have servants hearts and play a huge role in helping members of our community. The group's dedication serves as an inspiration for neighbors to come together, support one another, and create a stronger, more resilient community.”
